Environment variables and secrets

Give apps and jobs settings and secrets on Drasken Cloud, with app variables, environment groups shared across apps, and .env import.

Apps and jobs read their settings from environment variables. You set them on the app itself, or in an environment group under Public Cloud → Secrets that several apps and jobs share. Each variable is a plain value or a secret; secret values are written to the project and never shown again, not even to you.

How do I add variables to an app?

On the app's Configuration → Environment tab (or under Environment when you create it), add variables one by one, or select Import .env to paste up to 100 lines. Then choose Save and deploy to apply them, or Save only to apply them with the next deploy.

What are the rules for variable names?

  • Uppercase letters, digits and _, not starting with a digit, up to 128 characters.
  • PORT is set by the platform and cannot be set by you; a few prefixes are reserved for the platform, and the console tells you if a name uses one.

What is an environment group?

A named set of variables kept in the project, for settings several apps or jobs share — a database address, an API key. Create one under Public Cloud → Secrets with Create group, then add it to apps and jobs. An app can use up to 10 groups; when two groups set the same name, the later group wins.

A group that is in use cannot be deleted; remove it from its apps and jobs first.

How are secrets protected?

  • A secret's value is never shown again after you save it, in the console or anywhere else.
  • To change one, enter a new value.
  • Going back to an earlier release does not bring back old secret values.
